Nick Fish on social justice

Just Out Endorses Nick Fish for Portland City Council

"The time has come for Nick Fish to take his place as a member of the Portland City Council.  In a distinguished career that began as a legislative aide to openly gay Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and extends to his career as a civil rights lawyer, Fish has worked tirelessly to extend equal rights to all people.  He has been an outspoken advocate of marriage equality, a leader on fair and affordable housing, and a vital supporter of our city’s vibrant arts and culture community.  Nick Fish’s Just Out endorsement is well earned."

Nick’s Commitment to Social Justice

Nick believes that Portland’s success depends on every citizen having the opportunity to succeed.  For the past 20 years as a civil rights lawyer and civic activist, Nick has helped people without power achieve justice by fighting for better pay and benefits for health care workers, helping those suffering the crushing burden of poverty find good homes and family-wage jobs and leading a community coalition to save the Portland Women’s Crisis Line.
As a new voice at City Hall, Nick will work tirelessly to:

  1. Secure Human Rights.  Lead the effort to implement the Metropolitan Human Rights Commission.
  2. Support Diversity.  Oppose efforts to weaken domestic partnerships and non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
  3. Open City Hall.  Create opportunities for sexual minorities and people of color.
  4. Engage Our Seniors.  Implement a plan to create new opportunities for work and civic engagement for older adults.

Nick is endorsed by progressive organizations and leaders throughout our community, including: Governor Barbara Roberts, Basic Rights Oregon Equality PAC (Green Light), NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon (Green Light), Just Out, Terry Bean, State Senator Avel Gordly and State Representative Tina Kotek.
